Alternatively, you can use the text version of the activity below. Try to find the faces in the pictures as quickly as possible, there are five paintings in total. Painting 1: John Freeth and his Circle This paininting by Johannes Eckstein, is otherwise known as 'Birmingham Men
of the Last Century', it shows John Freeth, (seated, second from left), with
members of the radical Birmingham Jacobin Club, who met at Freeth's tavern
in Bell Street, from 1768 to 1808. Painting 2: The Finding of the Saviour in the Temple The artist William Holman Hunt visited the Near East to see the historical
and archaeological backgrounds for his biblical scenes. At the time artists
believed that modern Islamic architecture was similar to that in biblical times.This painting illustrates a scene, where the child Jesus visits the temple
and astonishes the rabbis with his learning and understanding. Painting 3: Dominicans in Feathers The title compares the black and white feathers of the penguins to the black
and white robes of Dominican monks. It was intended to be both comic and satirical. The painter, Henry Stacey Marks was noted for his humourous subjects and his paintings of birds. He once said that birds made better models that humans, since they were less conceited, less greedy and less boring! Painting 4: May Morning on Magdalen College Tower The custom shown in the painting is the greeting of the May sun and is observed annually at Magdalen College, where the fellows and president ascend to the tower to sing. Dr Bloxam introduced the ceremony in 1840, he is the fourth
figure from the right. Painting 5: The Feast of Peleus This painting by Sir Edward Burne-Jones represents the marriage of the mortal
Peleus to the sea-goddess Thetis, with all the Olympian gods in attendance.
Eris, the Goddess of Discord, casts an apple onto the table marked 'for the
fairest', an event which in turn, planted the seeds for the Trojan War. |
