Together with Hunt’s 'Hireling Shepherd' and Millais’s 'Ophelia', ‘The Pretty Baa Lambs’ is considered to be ONE of the THREE revolutionary paintings begun in 1851, which attempted to depict the effect of sunlight on figures in landscapes. The figures in the painting are Brown's wife Emma and child Catherine, they are dressed in eighteenth century costume, but according to the artist, no meaning is intended. The painting was started in 1851 and it occupied the artist on and off for over an eight year period. The painting was then purcahsed in 1859 by Newcastle industrialist.
The lambs and sheep used to be brought every morning from Clapham common in a truck. On one morning, one of the sheep ate up all the flowers in the garden!
